Room 5 is learning about what home life would be without electricity. Last week we washed our own clothes by hand. We had to get into groups, talk about what we were going to do, and get everything ready. We needed sunlight soap, buckets and water – and dirty clothes of course!
We went outside and filled up our buckets at the tap by Room 3. We put our clothes in the water to get them wet, and then we scrubbed them with sunlight soap. Next we rubbed them together to make them foamy. We put them in the bucket of water and pulled them up and pushed them down and pulled them up and pushed them down, over and over!
After that we squeezed them out and put them in a pile and poured our bubbly water out onto the grass. Next we went to the tap again and filled our buckets up with fresh water. Then we rinsed the clothes again by pulling them up and pushing them down. We had to squeeze them out extra tight; some of us needed help to get all the water out. One person held one end, and one on the other and we twisted the clothes to get the water out.
Next we pegged our clothes on the line. It awesome because we didn’t use electricity. It was fun because we could get stains out without electricity. It was fun because the soap made bubbles. Six children from Room 5 have done washing like this at home since we learned to do it at school!!
